Gun Violence Response

Effective, Innovative Enforcement

By focusing on the few who commit violent acts and leveraging cutting-edge technology, we will work to swiftly identify and take decisive legal action against those engaged in gun violence. I intend to protect our communities with proven evidence-based strategies, not over-policing.

I have witnessed the impacts of gun violence in our state on the front lines, present at the scenes of two of Colorado's most devastating mass shootings: the Aurora movie theater tragedy and the Planned Parenthood incident. These experiences have galvanized my commitment to gun reform.

Testified in Support of Pres. Obama’s 2013 Gun Crime Package: In 2013, I was the administration’s witness before the Senate Judiciary Committee supporting Pres. Obama’s gun crime package in the aftermath of the Aurora Theater and Sandy Hook mass shooting, and advocated for a ban on assault weapons.

Restriction of Deadly Firearm Components: Prioritizing the prohibition of large-capacity magazines and accessories that speed up discharge rates.

Universal Background Checks: Instituting comprehensive checks and enacting measures to prevent firearms from reaching individuals posing threats to themselves or others.

Colorado’s “Red Flag” Law: Testified before the Colorado House and the Colorado Senate in support of Colorado’s “red flag” law authorizing law enforcement to collect firearms from individuals shown to be an imminent threat to self or others.

Improved Threat Detection: Strengthening systems that identify, and prevent potential shooters, focusing on their "leaked" intentions and spikes in gun-purchasing patterns.  We can enforce our existing gun laws more effectively to identify those who are actually using firearms in violent crimes, and to respond quickly, effectively to get them off the streets.

Restriction on Ghost Guns: Addressing the rise of easily assembled weapons that bypass background checks and waiting periods, a trend that has brought undue violence to our state and local communities.

Gun crime is all-too-present in our daily lives. Under my leadership, the Denver DA's office will be unwavering in our approach to gun crime. I am resolute in my commitment to taking strict measures to ensure that those who resort to gun violence are held accountable and kept off our streets.

Together, we can strike a balance between ensuring community safety and upholding justice.
