A Dedicated Partnership Against Car & Catalytic Converter Theft
In 2022, Colorado had the highest car theft rate in the nation. From 2011 to 2020, auto theft rose by 144%, making it the fastest-growing trend in the nation. The prime targets are often cars like Kias and Hyundais owned by everyday, hardworking families. I understand the profound impact of these thefts. For many of us, a car isn't just a vehicle—it's an economic lifeline, a means to get to work, school, and doctor's appointments. Even more concerning is that these stolen cars aren't just disappearing; they're sometimes being used to facilitate other crimes, some of them violent. I will work to establish a multi-jurisdictional partnership throughout the Metro Area to combat this issue and will redouble our efforts here in Denver. We need to tackle this serious issue directly to protect our community's well-being. Car thefts affect us all, but they particularly strain our working families, who rely on their vehicles daily. As Denver District Attorney, I plan to prioritize this matter, ensuring our streets are safer and our families are protected.
